UMCOR: Haiti Relief Efforts PDF Print E-mail

HAITI: EARTHQUAKE RECOVERY UPDATE

   The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), with the help of the Methodist Church in Haiti, has leased office space in Port-au-Prince and hired staff to advance the work plan that was drawn up by a team of UMCOR executives that assessed damages and needs following the January 12 earthquake.

   "Our intention is to be operational as soon as possible," said Sharad Aggarwal, one of the executives who participated in the assessment. Aggarwal expects the office to begin operating this week.

UM Communications Impact Community

   This is the progression of the previous Matching Grant program and will partner with church clusters, districts and conferences to reach beyond their church buildings and actively engage with community volunteers to impact their neighborhoods and towns.

Each grant awarded will associate with an Impact event and once again, assist with the promoting and advertising of the event.

This new initiative is part of the Rethink Church 2010 strategy urging churches to move out into their communities, creating doors of entry to engage the unchurched.

UMCOR-Fair Trade Challenge PDF Print E-mail

UMCOR INITIATES FAIR TRADE CHALLENGE

   At the end of a year-long challenge 100-Ton Fair Trade Challenge, United Methodists purchased 82.4 tons (or over 164,000 pounds) of fairly traded coffee, tea, chocolate and snacks through UMCOR's partner, Equal Exchange, and 448 United Methodist churches newly-joined the UMCOR Coffee Project.
